Inbox 7 saw a terrible picture of the gynecology department at the Clinical Hospital in Tetovo. Obsolete equipment, a dilapidated gynecological chair that resembles more of a museum piece than apparatus for interrupted pregnancies. Instead of specialized and sterilized sheets,we saw bowls under the gynecological chair. With one word – the photos made by Inbox 7 in Tetovo gynecology department can only be seen in a horror film scene. From the medical staff we learned that they have equipment even 35 years old. The desperate situation in the gynecology department where patients are examined from the Tetovo region has raised many reactions, and expectations of the public for urgent intervention by the competent authorities.
In conversation with a nurse who was on duty at the time when the team of Inbox 7 was taking photos of the department, we learned that the equipment has not been changed for many years:
“I have been working in the hospital for 35 years and since then nothing has changed”, said a nurse who asked to remain anonymous.
Despite these claims, the Ministry of Health says Tetovo Clinical Hospital was restored in 2012:
“The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at CH Tetovo was completely reconstructed in 2012, whereby all toilets were covered, as well as the floors in the obstetrics department, birthing rooms and operating rooms. New equipment has been procured, which includes a 4-D ultrasound machine, anesthesia apparatus for operating room, laparoscopic pillar, operating chair, spotlight for operating room, an electrocautery, an incubator, and instruments for operations”.
We requested a response from the Medical Association of Macedonia (MCM) where they say they do not hold any information on the conditions in public or private hospitals. However, they say that the Clinical hospital in Tetovo is a health institution controlled by foreign experts, as it is a tertiary health institution.
In the Ombudsman’s office they say they would review the case and inform the competent authorities.
“The Ombudsman has received no other information on the conditions in public institutions, but will take measures to monitor the case of public institutions within the competence and inform the appropriate institutions”, states the Ombudsman’s office for Inbox 7.
Worrying rise in abortions
Apart from the shocking photos of the conditions in the gynecology department, we also faced some disappointing figures of abortions performed in the Tetovo region. Only since the beginning of 2014 the Clinical Hospital in Tetovo has registered 89 total terminations of pregnancy and 16 abortions.
According to the reports by the Clinical Hospital in Tetovo, in 2012 there were 145 terminated pregnancies and 47 abortions, while in 2013 spontaneous abortions tended to increase, 168 abortions and 42 incomplete miscarriages.
Women of all ages fail to carry their babies to full term, experiencing miscarriages caused by various factors. Why is this phenomenon occurring? Do climate factors affect? What challenges and problems are the pediatric and gynecology department of the Clinical Hospital in Tetovo facing? Does the hospital have enough staff to deal with all these negative trends? On all these issues we are waiting for a reply and emergency response from the competent ones.
The fact that there is an increase in spontaneous abortions in Tetovo region is confirmed by the specialists themselves, who express concern about this expanding phenomenon.
Gynecological infections common causes of miscarriages
“It is true that last year miscarriages increased in our country and we have a variety of cases”, says Dr. Luljeta Mulaku for Inbox 7.
According to Mulaku, most common causes of spontaneous abortions are gynecological infections.
“Genetic pathologies, malignancies in uterine neck, previous abortions and increased body weight are among the factors that contribute to miscarriages”, says Mulaku.
On the other hand, D-r Meral Redzepi, deputy head of gynecology department of Tetovo hospital for Inbox 7 says that the reasons for miscarriages are numerous, such as smoking, alcohol, radioactivity and many other similar factors.
“The majority of abortions occur due to chromosome abnormalities that hinder the normal development of the embryo”, says Redzepi.
According to the deputy head Redzepi, in 2012 the number of interrupted pregnancies was 145 and 45 incomplete abortions, and in 2013 spontaneous abortions tended to rise and there were 168 abortions and 42 incomplete miscarriages. In all these cases no invasive interventional treatment was made in appropriate hospital conditions.
The chief of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in the clinical hospital in Tetovo, Dr. Nagip Rufat, in a statement for Inbox 7 said that the building and infrastructure where abortions are performed is one of the elderly in the hospital.
“In this unit of the department of gynecology and obstetrics health services to the citizens are at a highly professional level obeying all professional and legal rules”, he says.
He adds that for these services there are appropriate institutions that continually monitor the work, and they have never had any objections to health services. He says that the clinical hospital in Tetovo has taken an initiative to physically approach the services to the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics and it will soon happen with the reorganization of departments.
The Clinical hospital in Tetovo sent a denial of this text.
“Why did not you publish these photographs? We agree that not only beautiful photographs should be published to create a false rosy picture, but it is equally degrading and unprofessional to publish only negative photographs, especially if some of them have been made up or taken elsewhere to further spice the negative impression, which was apparently intended to be created.
Fortunately, citizens see the hospital through your lens very little, and they most see it with their own eyes – not very rosy, nor excessive black. Even more fortunateis that citizens are wise, and you can not make them see everything through your intended black lens.
Finally, people remember well, and we are sure you do, what equipment used to be there, and what it is now!
Namely, the data show that in a top medical institution over 2,400 births were realized annually, simultaneously decreasing the number of abortions (in 2012 there were 503 abortions compared with 2013 when there were 443 abortions). Also, we remind that the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at CH Tetovo was completely reconstructed in 2012, whereby all toilets were covered, as well as the floors in the obstetrics department, birthing rooms and operating rooms.
New equipment has been procured, which includes a 4-D ultrasound machine, anesthesia apparatus for operating room, laparoscopic pillar, operating chair, spotlight for operating room, an electrocautery, an incubator, and instruments for operations”.
